T.B. Clinic

T.B. Clinic:

Staff: Dr. P. Raju, Incharge Medical Officer, Mr. Wajid Ali Khan, Treatment Supervisor, 6 Lab Technicians, 4 Home visitors and one Sister.

Activity: Conducting outpatient clinic and admitting patients with Tuberculosis under the public-private Mix DOTS programme for control of Tuberculosis. Today each of these divisions is involved in cutting-edge research, teaching, and service. The Departments of Genetics and Immunology of the Research Centre are actively engaged in research training and service activities, while the T.B. clinic is involved in patient care.

Department of Genetics

Department of Genetics:

Areas of Research Interest: Biochemical, Pharmacogenomic, and Molecular Studies in Breast Cancer, Hearing Handicap, HIV, Neurodegenerative and Cardiovascular Diseases, Infertility, and Diabetes. Monitoring of Industrial and Agriculture Workers, Traffic Police, and populations living near industries.

Department of Immunology

Department of Immunology:

Staff: Dr. G. Sumanlatha (Research Associate, Department Incharge), Ms. Meenakshi (Research Scholar)

Areas of Research Interest: Immunological and Molecular Studies in Tuberculosis, Asthma, and Allergy.

Research Projects

Three research projects funded by the Department of Biotechnology and Science and Technology to the Department of Immunology were successfully completed.

A research project on “Identify immunologic markers of persons at highest risk of progression of latent tuberculosis infection to tuberculosis” was sanctioned to Dr. G. Sumanlatha by DBT. Another on the Virtual Centre of Excellence was sanctioned to Late Dr. KJR Murthy. One international project was approved in collaboration with the University of Texas and Blue Peters.

Another project titled “Genotoxicity Studies in women Occupationally Exposed to Pesticides” by Dr. Hemaprasad and team was approved by DBT and operated during 2013–2016.

Research Scholars

Twenty-two students are working for Ph.D. at the research centre. Supervision is provided by:

Project Students

P.G. and U.G. students are permitted to carry out short-term research projects. In this year alone:

  • 12 students completed projects under Dr. Kaiser Jamil (Genetics)
  • 4 students completed projects under Dr. G. Sumanlatha (Immunology)

More are expected to join after college reopening.

Upcoming Research Submissions

2 projects from the Department of Immunology and 5 from the Department of Genetics are to be submitted for government funding this year.

National Seminar on Clinical Research

The National Seminar titled "Emerging Trends, Challenges and Innovative Approaches in Clinical Research in India" was held on April 27–28, 2013 with support from DST, ICMR, Pharma companies, and clinical research institutes. 258 delegates attended from across India.

Clinical Trial Projects

4 projects and amendments are pending approval. Communication with pharmaceutical companies is in progress.

A monitoring committee has been set up with Shri Surendra Luniyaji as Chairman. Monthly reviews will begin soon.

Monitoring of Clinical Trial Projects

In order to effectively carry out clinical trials, a committee to monitor the clinical trial projects is constituted with Shri Surendra Luniyaji as the Chairman of the Committee. Next month onwards the committee will review the functioning of the clinical trial projects of Mahavir Hospital & Research Centre.

Service Activities

The Department of Genetics provides facilities for cytogenetic and molecular investigations. Consultants are encouraged to refer cases for specialized testing.

T.B. Clinic Services

The clinic serves a population of 5 lakhs across areas like Mehdipatnam, Banjara Hills, Karwan, and more.

There are 52 DOT centers under 5 DMCs, including a new one at Apollo Medical College (opened April 1, 2013).

Up to May 31, 2013, 463 new cases were registered. Currently, 19 multi-drug resistant cases are under treatment.
